IFTA Compliance

Need Help

Need to register your company or vehicle contact us today - Contact

IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) is a cooperative agreement among 48 U.S. states and 10 Canadian provinces that simplifies fuel tax reporting for interstate motor carriers. It allows qualified, for-hire, or private commercial vehicles to file one quarterly report and pay fuel taxes to their base jurisdiction, rather than filing in each state they travel through.

Need IFTA?

You are generally required to have an IFTA license and decals if you operate a qualified motor vehicle across state lines or into Canadian provinces. A vehicle is considered qualified if it is designed for transporting people or property and meets any of these criteria:

  • Has two axles and a registered/gross vehicle weight (GVW) over 26,000 lbs.
  • Has three or more axles regardless of weight.
  • Is used in a combination (truck + trailer) with a total GVW over 26,000 lbs.

Key Requirements & Exemptions

  • Registration: You must register in your base jurisdiction (where your vehicles are registered, your business is based, and miles are accrued).
  • Reporting: A quarterly IFTA tax return must be filed even if the fleet did not operate or no tax is due.
  • Decals: Two IFTA decals must be displayed on the exterior of each side of the vehicle's cab.
  • Exemptions: Recreational vehicles (RVs), farm-plated vehicles, and government-owned vehicles are typically exempt.
  • Penalty: Operating without a license/decals may result in fines, citations, and the need to purchase trip permits.
